Cook Island Language Week

In Week 2 of this term it was Cook Island Language Week across all of New Zealand. It was a chance of all New Zealanders to celebrate the rich culture of the Cook Islands. The Cook Island is the second largest Polynesian ethnic group after Samoans.

At Meadowbank School we celebrated Cook Island language week by learning about a special quilt made by the women called a 'Tivaevae'. On the Thursday juniors and seniors met at lunch time in Room 38 to learn about Cook Island dancing and the Tivaevae.

Many of Room 37 and 38 students were there to support the younger students. It was a great way to see both juniors and seniors working and learning together.

Here are the tivaevae made out of paper and a video of the events that happened last week.
